The book Arabic Prosody and Rhyme: Integrating Khalilian and Modern Prosody, written by Dr. Ali-Asghar Ghahremani Moghadam, faculty member of the Faculty of Literature and Humanities at Shahid Beheshti University, has been published.

According to the Public Relations Office of Shahid Beheshti University, this valuable work—comprising 419 pages and published in a royal octavo format by Ney Publishing—is the result of more than twenty years of the author’s research and teaching in the field of Arabic prosody and rhyme. The book offers a fresh perspective on revisiting and updating the prosodic theory of Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi.

In this work, while emphasizing the efficiency and durability of Khalilian prosody with its twelve-century legacy, Dr. Ghahremani Moghadam adopts a modern and analytical approach to address certain gaps in the traditional method. Drawing on fundamental concepts such as sabab and watad, he replaces the conventional system of moving and quiescent letters with syllabic description. Alongside preserving traditional concepts such as zihaf and illah, the author introduces new terms such as “metrical permissibility” (jawāz waznī) for poetic liberties and “metrical distinguisher” (mumayyiz waznī) for identifying the meter of each poetic pattern.

Beyond its research contributions, Arabic Prosody and Rhyme employs educational tables and diverse literary examples to offer a practical, step-by-step instruction of prosody from the basic to the advanced level. This book serves as a valuable resource for students of Arabic and Persian language and literature, researchers, and anyone interested in the analysis of poetic meter and rhyme.
